I don't think it's purely accidental that it's part of every major religion; I think that at least some religious people are quite conscious of the effect that sharing a meal can have. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In Peopleware, Tom DeMarco and Tim Lister mostly talk about teamicide -- killing productive teams. But the one chapter they have on building teams is, strangely enough, a description of a team that makes a spaghetti dinner together. I don't think that's an accident. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And of course this is one reason that at Construx we have an all-company lunch every Friday, sometimes even with beer. &lt;/p&gt;
