    Practices for Micro-ISV

    Hello.

    I'm trying to be Micro-ISV.

    Can you, please, tell:

    • What best materials does Construx has for technical side of mISV job?
    • What materials does the company has for business side of mISV
      (public relations, marketing, licensing, copyright, etc.) job?
    • What best software engineering practices (life-cycle, if any)
      are there for mISV?

    Thank you.
    P.S. I've read most of Steve McConnell's books, CxOne, this forum/blog.

    Hello Maksym,

    Wow, how micro, one? We don't sell much in the way of materials, we deliver best practices training and consulting. A great resource for an independent is Gerry Weinberg's book Secrets of Consulting or Peter Block's Flawless Consulting.

    As far as a life-cycle for a mISV, it kinds of depends on the contract you get. However, keeping the deliveries incremental (from agile to staged) is probably a good idea.

    Enjoy,
    Earl

    Yes. Currently one. I have no contract and it is too early for consulting :)

    Construx is targeted on big and medium ISVs. On the team development.
    I'm trying to ask, what does company has for Micro ISV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_ISV)?

    For example, there are:
    http://blog.businessofsoftware.org/;
    http://www.ericsink.com/, and his book;
    http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/?biz;
    http://www.projectglidepath.net/glidepath/default.aspx;
    - Bal Walsh has book "Micro ISV: from vision to reallity".

    What do you think about micro?

    We think micro ISVs are great! From the "solo developer point of view, we have many forms, templates, and checklists on our web site. We also have a public version of our professional development ladder.

    We have had several independent developers attend our training on subjects such as requirements, design, and developer testing. Less have attended our project leadership seminars since they are more focused on teams.

    From the broader "developer+all business aspects" point of view, that isn't really what we do. We're focused on helping improve software development in a business context, but not on the business practices per se.

    Enjoy,
    Earl
